The Occasion:
It was necessary for Clare to come to the USA in October and November, 1999 to interview
Marian McPartland in New York, as she is doing a PhD on Marian's life in jazz. Clare's session on Marian's
radio program, Piano Jazz, is scheduled for broadcast in 2000. With Clare in the USA, I was presented
with the ideal opportunity to record this CD with her. I recruited Roger and David, who I knew
to be much more than merely capable. I am sure the listener will also agree as their fine skills and
beautiful playing. So the quartet was formed and we recorded this CD November 6-9, 1999.
Neall Strand - Alto and Tenor saxophones
I am a retired mathematician and scientist. In 1983 I gave up mathematics forever to pursue my
dream of becoming a jazz musician. Most of what I have learned about jazz has been learned in
the last fifteen years. I also play with the Poudre River Irregulars, a Dixieland group.
Roger Barnhart - Bass
Roger is a full-time professional musician who plays with the Fort Collins Symphony and Greeley
Philharmonic in Colorado and the Cheyenne Symphony in Wyoming as well as the Poudre River
Irregulars, PDQ (Poudre Dance Quartet), the DAQ Jazz Quartet, and the Blender Cats.
Roger is also a successful visual artist whose painting is displayed on the cover of this CD.
Clare Hansson - Piano
Class is a world-class Australian pianist with a delightful melodic style and a rare talent
as a sensitive accompanist. She has played with most of the top jazz players in Australia,
has been a frequent performer at many jazz festivals and has accompanied well-known jazz artists
from New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
David Johnson - Drums
David is orchestra manager / educational coordinator and principal percussionist with the Cheyenne
Symphony and also performs with the Fort Collins Symphony, the Greeley Philharmonic and the Poudre
River Irregulars. He leads his own ensembles including Mallets Unlimited and the swing group
Poudre Dance Quartet (PDQ). David is active as a clinician and soloist and has an extensive studio of
private students.
