I, Dr. Clare Hansson, the author and publisher of this research on the Internet, wish to advise that all reasonable efforts have been made to trace owners of copyrighted material quoted in this Website. If insufficient recognition has been shown please contact the publisher of the work in question. Marian McPartland approved and supported the research, and has cleared all her copyrighted material for release on the Internet. I am most grateful to the Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University, Newark, NJ, for access to ‘The Marian McPartland File’ and the ‘John S. Wilson File’ held within their archive. This material filled in many gaps across the years. I limited my usage of copyrighted material to 10%. Under the Copyright Act, this is permitted for purposes of research, critiquing and study to quote short excerpts, some limited to two sentences. I clearly referenced each source, also indicating unknown sources, authors, dates. Many publishers, record companies, magazines are now defunct. I contacted all referenced sources either by email or mail from 2006 to 2008. I removed all reference to organizations that refused to grant permission. I complied with conditions stipulated by organizations that granted permission. Those who ignored my requests were emailed, in some cases, multiple times. In the case of Oxford University Press, who refused permission to quote from Marian McPartland’s 1987 book, I obtained permission to include the work in my list of references, and to display a scanned image of the dust jacket, also obtaining permission from the photographer. I am most grateful to The University of Illinois Press for permission to quote short excerpts from Marian McPartland’s Jazz World: All In Good Time, an updated and expanded edition of the 1987 book. I am most grateful to Concord Music Group for permission to survey, display images, sound samples and text from material owned by that organization during Marian McPartland’s thirty year recording career with this label. I also acknowledge permission granted from Savoy Label Group for similar usage of their material in the chapter Early Recordings. I acknowledge permission from the producers of Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz to survey and display images, sound samples and text from material owned by South Carolina ETV and Radio. Some Magazines that have not yet cleared copyright are represented by quoting short excerpts, and every effort has been made to contact authors, publishers and legal departments. Authors of some articles proved impossible to contact, so I made the decision after multiple attempts to track them down to submit material under ‘fair use’ conditions. Re Liner Notes, I obtained several approvals from authors, and now understand that the record companies own the rights to these Notes. I was unable to contact three photographers (either deceased or non-contactable) so displayed the image in the interests of my work being an educational resource. I had no success in contacting authors of theses. I drew some material from Websites where ownership resides with the author of an article. I made multiple attempts to contact the authors of such material, to no avail, even though they claimed ownership of interviews or reviews of Marian McPartland’s jazz career. All authors are clearly acknowledged. No permission is necessary for releasing a Discography, as it was compiled from material available in the public domain. © Dr. Clare Hansson |
